Venus Retrograde: Why the Past Comes Back Around

How to use these 40 days to get clear on your desires and what you value now

An ex texts you out of nowhere. Three years of silence, and now "hey, how are you?" is sitting on your phone at 9pm on a Tuesday. Or nothing that obvious happens. You're just more irritated than usual that you're the one who always makes the plans. You look at your credit card statement and wonder what you could have spent so much on. You catch yourself replaying a conversation from years ago, one you thought you'd made peace with.

When a few of these show up in the same stretch of weeks, it can feel like you're going backward. Like the work you did to move on, heal, and grow didn't actually hold up.

This is Venus retrograde. You're not going backward. You're being asked to revisit what was never finished, so you can move forward in line with what you want now.

What Venus retrograde means

Venus is the planet of what we love and what we value. That includes relationships, but also money, pleasure, beauty, and self-worth. Anywhere you're deciding what something is worth to you, and what you're worth in return, you're in Venus territory.

About every 19 months, Venus appears to slow down, stop, and move backward through the zodiac for roughly 40 days. Nothing reverses in reality. Venus is passing between the Earth and the Sun on its faster inside track, and from where we stand it looks like it's retracing its steps. Venus spends less time retrograde than any other planet, so when it happens, people tend to really feel it.

In astrology, a retrograde planet turns its attention inward. The usual Venus activities of attracting, connecting, spending, and saying yes get quieter, and a review takes their place. What do I want from the people closest to me? What am I giving, and what's coming back? Does the way I spend my time, money, and energy still match what matters to me?

You've probably heard the warnings. Don't start a new relationship. Don't get married. Don't cut your hair or make a big purchase. That's the fortune-telling version of astrology, and I don't practice that way. Venus retrograde doesn't end relationships. It shows you what was already broken. A relationship that's working usually comes out of these weeks stronger than before, but only after having some deeply honest conversations. The ones that struggle or come to an end were running on old agreements and unspoken expectations that hadn't been acknowledged in a long time.

Why the past comes back

This is what people notice first. Former partners reappear. So do old friends, former clients, unfinished conversations, and feelings you thought you processed.

Venus is going back over ground it already covered, and so are we. What returns isn't random. It tends to be whatever's been left incomplete. The conversation you avoided, the resentment you talked yourself out of, the thing you really wanted but decided was too much to ask for.

An ex reaching out is not a sign you belong together. It’s a chance to look at that relationship, and who you were in it, from where you stand today. Sometimes you see how much you've changed. Sometimes you see that you made the same trade in the next relationship, and the one after that.

There's also a longer cycle playing out underneath. Venus retrogrades through the same part of the zodiac every eight years, so each retrograde has earlier chapters you can look up. Whatever is surfacing for you now probably has similar themes to what was going on for you eight years ago, and from eight years before that.

The 2026 Venus retrograde in Scorpio and Libra

This year, Venus is retrograde from October 3 to November 13. It begins at 8° Scorpio and ends at 23° Libra. These two signs ask different questions of us personally and Venus experiences her time in each sign very differently.

The first part of her retrograde journey is through the sign of Scorpio, where we're pulled beneath the surface to have encounters with deep, hidden truths. Trust, intimacy, sex, jealousy, power, control, secrets, and the ways we protect ourselves are all up for review. Venus is in detriment here, opposite her home sign of Taurus. Her usual tools of charm, ease, and keeping things pleasant don't work in Scorpio, so she has to get honest instead. Scorpio wants to know: what happens when I let someone close?

On October 23, Venus meets the Sun at the very first degree of Scorpio. This is the midpoint of the retrograde, where Venus dies to be reborn at the heart of the Sun. Venus disappeared from the evening sky, and after this meeting she reappears before dawn as a morning star. Astrologers treat this as the start of a new Venus cycle, which makes it the turning point of the whole 40 days. Up to this point, things have been surfacing. After it, you start to see what you want to do about it.

Two days later, on October 25, Venus continues backward into Libra, and the tone changes. Venus rules Libra, so she's at home here. She has access to her full toolkit - tact, perspective, the ability to see both sides. What Scorpio forced out into the open, Libra can finally talk through and find perspective. The questions move toward reciprocity, fairness, compromise, and the balance between your needs and someone else's. Libra wants to know: can I stay connected without abandoning myself?

This current retrograde echoes two earlier cycles:
•      October 5 to November 16, 2018
•      October 8 to November 18, 2010

Think back. What was happening in your relationships then? What were you learning about love, money, self-worth, trust, or power? You aren't repeating the same chapter, but you'll likely recognize similar themes.

What areas of your life are being most activated and how this shows up for you depends on your natal chart. The houses that hold Scorpio and Libra in your chart, and the planets Venus touches as it moves back through them, determine whether this is mostly about your marriage or romantic partnership, your personal finances, career and reputation, home, family, and children, or your relationship with yourself. The general forecast can describe the weather. Your chart shows which rooms of your life it's moving through.

For me, this transit is hitting a powerful placement in my chart, and I've been feeling it. Venus stationed retrograde just one degree from my natal Pluto, the planet of power, control, and transformation, and she'll pass back over it on her way to Libra. This is all happening in my 4th house of home, roots, and family, two months after I moved back to my hometown of Chicago after seven years in California. Home and the foundations of my life are all up for review, right alongside relationships, money, power, and control. I'm looking hard at where I belong, what a stable foundation means to me now, and what I'm willing to accept in exchange for feeling loved or secure.

How to work with Venus retrograde

Start by taking the pressure off. You don't need to turn every realization into an immediate decision. These 40 days are for gathering information and seeing things more clearly. Choices made in the middle of a review are often just attempts to get out of the discomfort as quickly as possible. Most of them can wait until Venus stations direct when you can see the whole picture.

I'm practicing this myself right now. I've noticed the urge to escape the discomfort and reach for old coping mechanisms. Old ways to feel safe, old ways to find a sense of control, old ways to feel powerful. But noticing the feelings doesn't mean I have to act on them. Daily meditation and journaling are helping me stay present long enough to listen to the parts of me that want to escape, hold on tighter, or take back control. I'm trying to understand what those parts are afraid of and what they need from me before I decide how to respond.

  • Pay attention to what returns. Keep a journal page or running note on your phone: who and what you can't stop thinking about, what's been irritating you more than usual, what you wanted but didn't ask for. After a couple weeks, the pattern reveals itself.

  • Look honestly at where giving and receiving has become unequal. Go through the last few months of spending and ask whether it reflects what you care about, or shows you something about what you were trying to feel.

  • Let your desires change. Some of what you wanted eight years ago, or even two months ago, you don't want anymore. Admitting that isn't a betrayal, especially when not admitting it requires abandoning yourself.

Takeaway

Old feelings coming back around doesn't mean you failed to heal or move on. This is a natural cycle, a period of review, that asks us to walk back through the house we used to live in. The rooms haven't changed. You have, but you can only tell how much by standing in them again. Then you decide what comes with you this time and what you leave behind.
